2024 Q1 Message from the KNC President
Greetings Coin Club Members
Here we are at the end of the 1st Quarter of 2024 already. Time is going fast as usual. Our club keeps things rolling at a great pace.
Monthly auctions seem to be a big interest for everyone. I am so amazed at how many lots of interesting numismatic stuff gets put on the tables for the auction. The March auction set yet another new record with 150 lots on the tables.
We started a new system for the auction in March to get more lots on the tables for our junior members. The new rule is that each member who puts lots on the tables must have one lot marked for junior members. March was a test for the new rule with some lessons learned that will be implemented for the April auction. Now we have to get more junior members to attend auction night.
Reminder that each club member may enter up to ten lots of the auction table and one of the ten can be of non-numismatic items. The auction is open to the public so anyone can bid on the lots during the auction.
The Spring Coin Show is Saturday, April 6, at the Kalamazoo Expo Center. Our club Vice President, Richard Easterday, will be in charge of the spring show. Ron Hale is the Bourse Chair for the show. It appears that all the tables are sold out again.
On a positive note, it was a great move that we added more tables to our show. The Expo Center has raised the rent for the room. Without adding more tables our profit from the show would shrink.
Club member volunteers will be needed as usual for the set-up on Friday and the show on Saturday.
Security for our show must be a top priority. Everyone must keep their eyes open for anything they see that may look unusual, as well as suspicious buyers. If you spot something or someone that just does not look right, get involved immediately and let other club members know that you need help.
The club reserves the right to refuse access to anyone who may seem to be a threat to the show. Buyers in the show that pose a threat should be reported to our club Vice President immediately so that he can deal with them. Never hesitate to call 911 if you feel there is a suspected emergency that needs to have law enforcement involved.
It appears that interest is growing for bus trips to other shows. Three shows have been on the radar of the club board for 2024.
The first bus trip for 2024 will be to Central States Coin Show in Schaumburg, Illinois, near the airport in Chicago on Thursday, May 2, 2024. Tickets are on sale now – see Ron Hale to purchase your ticket for $40. Club and non-club members are welcome to join the bus trip.
The ANA show is in August and the Michigan State Show is in November. If the turnout is great for the May bus trip, the board will consider bus trips to those shows as well.
Elections for the club Board of Directors will be in August with the swearing in at the auction meeting in September. I strongly encourage all club members to consider becoming a board member at some point in time.
Some of the current board members (including me) have stated that they will be stepping down from their board position. This will leave some board positions vacant.
Remember, if the Kalamazoo Numismatic Club does not have an active Board of Directors, then we do not have a club. Get Involved and keep our club active.
