Kalamazoo County Expo Center

The Coin Collecting Merit Badge will be offered for registered Scouts at the November 4,
2023, Kalamazoo Numismatic Club Coin Show. The show will be held at the Kalamazoo
County Expo Center (Fairgrounds). The show will run from 9 am to 3 pm, and the Merit
Badge session will run from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. There is no charge for admission to the
show or to participate in the Merit Badge session. The Merit Badge counselors are Jim
VanderRoest, Brad Bloom, Peter Copeland, and all registered Scouters and club
members.

Scouts should obtain and read the Coin Collecting Merit Badge pamphlet in advance of the
show. Some other advance work will need to be done by the Scout if the Merit Badge is to
be completed at the show. Otherwise, the Scout will receive a “partial” and will need to
complete any incomplete requirements on his/her own.

The following requirements or parts of requirements should to be completed before (or
after, if a partial is received) the show:

  • [Part] Collect five (5) different state quarters from circulation and show them to your
    counselor.
  • Collect from circulation (and show your counselor), a set of currently circulating U.S.
coins. Include one (1) coin of each denomination (cent, nickel, dime, quarter, half-dollar,
dollar). For each coin, locate the mint marks, if any, and the designer’s initials, if any.
  • Do ONE of the following:
    • Collect and identify fifty (50) foreign coins from at least ten (10) different countries.
    • Collect and identify twenty (20) bank notes from at least five (5) different countries.
    • Collect and identify fifteen (15) different tokens or medals.
    • For each year since the year of your birth, collect a date set (one example of each
date) of a single type of coin. (Recommended)

Please note that attendance at the show (with the parent’s permission) completes requirement 10 (10 b). Each Scout should attend the show with his/her parent or Scout leader. Scouts and Scout leaders, please wear your Scout uniforms. The Merit Badge session will begin at 11:00 am sharp and should be done by 1:00 pm. Each Scout will be required to complete each requirement individually.

All Scouts who attend the Coin Collecting Merit Badge program on November 4th will receive, at no cost, a special Whitman coin folder developed especially for the Coin Collecting Merit Badge, shown at right.
