Overview of 2023 Education Meetings

June 2023 Education Meeting – presented by Cary Miller, our club librarian. What a great presentation with lots of information to share with the club.

“The title of my presentation was ‘Tokens, medals & other numismatic curiosities’. I covered many different tokens & medals. It was a great experience researching them. My favorites were Canadian bank tokens, Civil war tokens, & U.S. Military medals. Tokens & medals require much research & can be quite challenging, but great fun. I would highly recommend to other people in our coin club to give an educational presentation. You also earn 5 tickets to better your chances of winning the 1/10 oz gold coin at our annual Christmas party. In closing I would like to thank Dean for his help with the presentation.

July 2023 Education Meeting – presented by Tom Wood. The topic was “Southern Gold”. Tom is originally from Kalamazoo Michigan and is a great friend of many club members. Tom currently lives in Lynchburg, Virginia where he founded the Lynchburg Coin Club and created his own Coin Shop. Tom displayed a great variety of Gold Coins for the club members to view and talked about the history, rarity & value of the gold coins. It was extremely interesting to listen to Tom talk about each gold coin and explain its features.

August 2023 Education Meeting – the club did not have a guest speaker for the August Education Meeting but instead had a second Swap Meet. The tables were full of numismatic items for selling, buying, or trading. The room was abuzz with activity. It seems that the club members really enjoy a swap meet. Lots of positive feedback was received about how great it was.

September 2023 Education Meeting – Richard Easterday, our club Vice President, gave an awesome & very informative presentation about “War Nickels of North America”.

Richard did a show and tell about US & Canadian War Nickels. Lots of information was shared about the War Nickels that quite a few of us did not know. What an education meeting it was. So many different varieties exist that were explained to the club. It was interesting as well to learn about the Canadian War Nickels. Did you know about counterfeit “Henning” War Nickels & Love Token Nickels? Felix Schlag is the designer of the Jefferson Nickel. He was born in Frankfurt Germany and died in March 1974 and is buried in Owosso Michigan. Take a day trip out to that cemetery in Owosso & check out his grave site. It is very impressive.
